Public awareness and understanding of VoIP continues to rise, and the percentage of British adults saying they’ve heard of the technology currently stands at a record 46 percent, up 9 percent from nine months ago, according to Harris Interactive.

The U.S. is experiencing a similar growth in awareness, with 51 percent of adults reporting having heard of VoIP, up 15 percent over the same period.

Despite the increase in awareness, similar proportions of people have not heard of the technology (41 percent of British and 36 percent of U.S. adults).
Around half of the adults are not using VoIP in both countries, and 26 percent of those individuals say they’ll likely consider or buy Internet telephony service in the next 12 months.

Among those interested, 53 percent of British respondents and 43 percent of American ones like the option of making free calls between users of the same provider.
